Which musical should you see in New York?
Musicals for families
- If you’re traveling with children, go for the Disney classics: The Lion King and Aladdin. Both work on two levels—entertaining for kids while giving parents plenty to enjoy as well.
- Wicked is another great choice, with its magical atmosphere. Also consider the Gazillion Bubble Show, a funny and original musical spectacle.
Musicals for couples
- Broadway offers wonderful love stories. Book tickets for Moulin Rouge and Chicago, each exploring romance in its own way.
- If you want to laugh, don’t miss The Book of Mormon. This musical takes religion to hilarious extremes. You’ll need solid English to catch all the humor, but the story is completely wild.
Biographical shows
- Biographical musicals tell the life story of a famous person. Hamilton, for example, follows the political career of Alexander Hamilton.
- More often, these shows focus on an artist’s career. MJ traces Michael Jackson’s biggest tour—the King of Pop’s most important performances. R&B singer Alicia Keys gets her own show in Hell’s Kitchen. Also worth seeing is Smash, a wild production inspired by Marilyn Monroe’s life.
Off-Broadway musicals
- Off-Broadway refers to shows performed outside the main Broadway theaters. This doesn’t mean lower quality—quite the opposite. Some Off-Broadway productions outshine major Broadway shows.
