Prince’s Purple Rain on Broadway: The Story
- The Purple Rain musical features songs from Prince’s landmark 1984 album of the same name. Prince won 2 Grammy Awards in 1985 for this iconic record.
- The musical performs the title track Purple Rain alongside more than 20 of Prince’s greatest hits. Expect “I Would Die 4 U”, “When Doves Cry”, “Take Me with U”, and “The Beautiful Ones”.
- The show transports you to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1984, the hometown of Prince Rogers Nelson. At that moment, the young artist is virtually unknown, but “The Kid”—as he’s called—is starting to turn heads with his socially conscious lyrics and distinctive style.
- The musical was created by major Broadway talents. Director Saheem Ali also staged the musical Buena Vista Social Club. Music director Jason Michael Webb won a Tony Award for MJ the Musical. Crucially, the production draws on the guidance of Bobby Z and Morris Hayes, two of Prince’s former band members.
