The Story of Chicago on Broadway
- Do you love jazz? Chicago is for you! This musical in New York immerses you in prohibition-era Chicago with a story based on a real crime that took place in Chicago in 1924. The starting point: two criminals, one of whom killed her lover and the other her husband, find themselves in prison. The two women will stop at nothing to become famous and attempt to regain their freedom.
- The musical is based on the play written in 1926 by Maurine Dallas Watkins, the journalist who was assigned to cover this crime story. It presents a brilliant satire on the corruption of justice at the time.
- The first version of the musical was on Broadway from 1975 to 1977. Chicago finally returned to the stage in 1996 and the show has been running ever since. Today, it is the longest-running show currently active on Broadway.
- In 1997, Chicago won 6 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and 6 Drama Desk Awards, also notably for Best Revival of a Musical. In addition, it received a Grammy Award for Best Musical Album. That’s quite an impressive résumé!
