Hamilton tells you the story of the birth of the United States of America by evoking the life of one of its founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. At the age of 19, the young man has just entered King’s College in New York, now Columbia University, but the American War of Independence propels him onto the battlefield. His courage will soon earn him recognition from George Washington, who will offer him the position of aide-de-camp.
The musical created in 2004 is, however, far from the usual biography! The show surprisingly blends historical facts with the influence of today’s hip-hop and hard R&B. A striking cocktail! Another wink from the producers: several white historical figures are portrayed on stage by black actors.
Proof of its success, Hamilton holds the record for the number of citations at a Tony Awards ceremony, the equivalent of the Oscars for theater. The show won 16 nominations and 11 awards at the 2016 Tony Awards!
