Lidl in New York: budget supermarkets!

What to Know About Lidl in New York

  • Lidl, the discount supermarket chain, was founded in 1930 in Germany by businessman Josef Schwarz. Since then, the brand has expanded to nearly thirty countries across Europe, including France, Belgium, and Switzerland. It also arrived in the USA in 2018. The first Lidl supermarket in the United States opened in late 2018 on the island of Staten Island, New York.
  • Lidl has continued growing across the American continent. The supermarket chain now operates 3 stores in Manhattan and a full network throughout the rest of the city, as well as on Long Island and in New Jersey. The most recent Manhattan location is brand new. It opened in April 2026 just steps from the Empire State Building, in Midtown.
  • Lidl is also expanding along the entire East Coast, with stores in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington D.C., and even Atlanta, Georgia. The brand applies the same formula that made it successful in Europe: limited selection but low prices. It competes with its rival, the supermarket chain Aldi, which is also well established in the USA.
