Madison Square Park: a charming park in New York
Madison Square Park sits next to the Flatiron Building and 5th Avenue. Yet this park offers a peaceful green space at the foot of the city's skyscrapers. Come here for lunch!

What You Need to Know About Madison Square Park
- Madison Square Park sits at the base of the Flatiron Building, where 23rd Street meets Fifth Avenue. The park covers nearly 3 hectares (7.4 acres).
- The park’s history dates back to 1686, though it wasn’t officially inaugurated until 1847.
- Madison Square Park had its moment of glory in 1876. It hosted the torch-bearing arm of the Statue of Liberty. The goal was to inspire New Yorkers to donate funds for the statue’s pedestal on Liberty Island. France had given the statue itself, but not its base. The complete Statue of Liberty was dedicated 10 years later, in 1886.
- The Flatiron Building rose across from the park in 1902. Today, Madison Square Park ranks among New York’s most iconic parks.

What to See in Madison Square Park
- The main draw is the view of the Flatiron Building. You can take original photos with the building framed by the park’s flower beds. Afterward, settle onto one of the benches along the flowered paths. The park features beautiful hydrangea gardens.
- Madison Square Park regularly hosts modern art installations. Expect to be surprised.
- Tip: Visit at lunchtime. The park comes alive with New Yorkers picnicking or taking a break. You can grab a burger at the Shake Shack terrace in the southern part of the park. This fast-casual chain has grown rapidly across New York, but the Madison Square Park location remains its flagship.
- Just outside the park, don’t miss the Harry Potter shop. It’s the world’s largest store dedicated to the wizarding world.
