Staten Island: New York’s Largest Borough
Staten Island is one of New York's 5 boroughs. Located across the bay from Manhattan, this quieter neighborhood faces the Atlantic Ocean and offers a different side of New York.

What is Staten Island?
- Staten Island is one of New York City’s five boroughs. It’s the least known borough, overshadowed by the famous Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx. It’s also the smallest borough by population, with fewer than 500,000 residents.
- As its name suggests, Staten Island is an island. A large one, covering 114 km² (44 sq mi) at the entrance to New York Harbor, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The borough sits across the bay from Manhattan, on the opposite side of the city.
- The island’s name comes from the Dutch “Staaten Eylandt,” given in 1609 by English explorer Henry Hudson to a trading post of the Dutch East India Company. The name honored the States General of the Dutch Republic, the main legislative body of the Netherlands at that time. The English translated it when Britain took control of New York in 1664.
- Few tourists visit Staten Island, mainly because of its location. But it’s worth the trip. You’ll see a side of New York most visitors never experience.
What to See on Staten Island
- A visit to Staten Island means a scenic ferry ride across New York Harbor. Take the Staten Island Ferry from Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan. The iconic orange ferry leaves Manhattan, passes the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and arrives in St. George, Staten Island’s main town. Most tourists get off and immediately return on the next ferry. But spend some time on the island instead—it’s worth exploring.
- Walk along the waterfront promenade that overlooks New York Harbor. You’ll enjoy views of the bay, Manhattan’s skyline, and New Jersey. At the end of the promenade stands a striking memorial to the island’s residents who died in the September 11, 2001 attacks.
- Shoppers will find plenty to do on Staten Island. Since 2019, the Empire Outlet has operated right next to the St. George ferry terminal. This outlet mall has about 30 stores offering discounted prices. Brands include American Eagle, Converse, Gap, H&M, Levi’s, Nike, and Old Navy.
- If you have more time, explore the rest of the island. You can see the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, a 4.1 km (2.5 mi) suspension bridge spanning the entrance to New York Harbor. The bridge is famous as the starting point of the New York Marathon, organized by New York Road Runners. Don’t miss South Beach, one of the finest beaches in New York.
