What is The Edge Observatory?

  • The Edge is an observatory that opened on March 11, 2020 in New York, in the heart of Manhattan. It occupies the top two floors of the new 30 Hudson Yards tower in the Hudson Yards neighborhood, in western Midtown. The 30 Hudson Yards tower rises 387 m (1,270 ft) high, with the observation platform on the 100th floor at 345 m (1,132 ft). This striking tower was designed by the New York architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox.
  • The Edge is the second-highest observatory in New York, behind One World Observatory at 382 m (1,254 ft) but ahead of the outdoor terraces at the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock.
  • What sets it apart from One World Observatory is The Edge’s outdoor platform—the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Called the “Sky Deck,” this triangular structure extends nearly 280 m² (3,000 sq ft) from the building and is surrounded by 79 glass panels 2.74 m (9 ft) high. This bold design inspired the observatory’s name. The Edge literally means “the edge” in English.
  • Expect a 360-degree view of New York unlike any other. This observatory is as much an experience as a viewpoint. You’re invited to walk on a glass floor suspended over the city. The tip of the Sky Deck is designed to hold just one person at a time, surrounded by glass walls. Thrilling!
  • The observatory also features a champagne bar ($16 per glass), a restaurant, a café, and several spots to relax and take in the views.

What’s New at The Edge in 2026

  • Since summer 2026, The Edge has added three spectacular immersive experiences to its already stunning views, arranged like a giant kaleidoscope.
  • The first space is called Pulse, designed to let you feel New York’s energy through a burst of color, light, and sound. Further along, the Crystal Cave creates the sensation of riding a rainbow, with mirror effects that shift color as the sun moves. Finally, Infinite City features mirrored columns that make the city appear to stretch endlessly. Perfect for unforgettable selfies.

Once you exit the elevators, there’s a large room that acts as a decompression chamber. Then when you go outside, you’re still far from the edge. The view is stunning. Gradually you gain confidence and step onto the platform without any stress.”

What to Do After The Edge

  • Consider spending the rest of your day on the High Line. This elevated park connects the Hudson Yards neighborhood to Meatpacking. The two activities pair perfectly. I recommend walking the High Line after the observatory so you’re not rushed. If you do it the other way around, you’ll keep watching the clock to make it to your observatory time slot.
  • Another option: head to the Hudson River and explore Hudson River Park. Why not take a cruise, such as the popular Harbor Lights cruise?
