What You Need to Know About Luna Park at Coney Island
- Luna Park is an amusement park located at Coney Island, a neighborhood in Brooklyn about 1 hour by subway from Manhattan‘s center. You’re still in New York, but you’ll discover a very different side of the city—one with beaches, rides, and cotton candy.
- Coney Island has always been a place where New Yorkers come to relax and have fun. The very first roller coasters were built along Coney Island’s beach in 1884. The gentle Gravity Switchback Railway, though, bore little resemblance to today’s thrilling rides.
- The original Luna Park opened in 1903, but the park’s real turning point came in 1927 with the opening of the Cyclone Rollercoaster, an impressive ride for its time. The ride is still there today, though its safety systems have been thoroughly modernized.
- Luna Park went into a slow decline starting in the 1960s. In 2010, the amusement park was revived by New York-based Central Amusement International. The park got a fresh start.

- Children have plenty of options too, with rides designed just for them: the Brooklyn Barges, the gentle Circus Coaster, Lynn’s Trapeze, and the Speed Boat. Other park favorites include the spinning teacups of the Tea Party and the classic B&B Carousel. Kids will have a hard time deciding what to try first.
