Board a US Navy Aircraft Carrier in New York
In New York, you can board an authentic US Navy aircraft carrier. I tested the USS Intrepid for you!

An Aircraft Carrier in New York Harbor
- If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping aboard an aircraft carrier, here’s your chance in New York. Head to Pier 86 on the Hudson River, at the corner of 46th Street and 12th Avenue, to board the USS Intrepid, a retired US Navy aircraft carrier.
- Since 1982, this authentic carrier has operated as a museum: the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. It’s one of New York’s most visited attractions, drawing over one million visitors each year.
- The USS Intrepid is a true veteran. The ship served during World War II and the Vietnam War, then finished its career with NASA as a recovery vessel for Gemini and Mercury space capsules during the space race.
What to See Aboard the Intrepid
- After entering, you’ll walk along the pier and board via a gangway. Head straight to the flight deck—the heart of any aircraft carrier. Here you’ll see the catapult system up close and about thirty military aircraft on display, from the Lockheed A-12 spy plane to the French Super Étendard, the predecessor to the Rafale.
- You’ll also enjoy sweeping views of the Midtown skyline and the Empire State Building. Don’t miss the Concorde, displayed on the pier outside.
- Explore the corridors and decks inside the carrier to discover more aircraft and exhibits on the USS Intrepid’s history. Climb to the bridge, where you can imagine commanding the ship. All aboard!
