How to See the Empire State Building Lobby

  • When we discuss the Empire State Building here, we usually focus on the spectacular views of New York from the observation deck at the top. But the building’s entrance lobby is equally worth experiencing.
  • Note that the visitor flow has changed in recent years. A decade ago, you could simply walk into the lobby to admire it. Today, the lobby functions as the building’s exit, so you’ll see it at the end of your visit.
  • You’ll pass through the main entrance on Fifth Avenue as you leave the observation deck. Don’t rush out. Take a moment to linger in this grand space. Too many visitors hurry through without stopping to look around—a real missed opportunity.
  • The Empire State Building lobby is one of the few interior spaces in New York designated as a historic landmark. It underwent a complete renovation in 2009 and now displays its original Art Deco splendor from the 1930s in full glory.

  • The lobby houses an information desk and, behind it, a massive mural showing the Empire State Building set on a map of New York State and the East Coast. The building looms large, surrounded by lights—a somewhat grandiose vision of the structure that held the title of New York’s tallest building for decades until the Twin Towers opened in 1973.
  • Look closely at the base of the Empire State Building image: the map shows the city of Albany marked with a small golden compass rose. Albany is the capital of New York State.
  • Don’t miss the ceiling frescoes celebrating the age of mechanization. You’ll also spot 24-karat gold stars. It’s a fitting finale before you head toward the exit and continue exploring New York.
