Why New York City Is Not the Capital of New York State
Did you know that New York City is not the capital of the state that bears its name? Here's the story behind this surprising fact...

New York City is not the capital of New York State
- Ask friends and family what the capital of New York State is, and most will answer “New York City” without hesitation. They’re wrong.
- Surprisingly, New York City is not the capital of New York State. The capital is Albany, a small city about 250 km (155 mi) north of New York City. This becomes even more striking when you compare populations: in 2025, Albany had just over 101,000 residents, while New York City had more than 8.2 million.
- Even Staten Island, the least populated borough of New York City, has five times more residents than Albany. In 2025, Staten Island had over 500,000 inhabitants. And Brooklyn alone has 2.3 million.
- Albany became the capital of New York State in 1797 and is the 10th oldest state capital in the United States.
Why is Albany the capital of New York State?
Albany was chosen as the state capital in the 18th century because it offered several strategic advantages:
- The city was positioned much more centrally within the state, whereas New York City sits at the southern tip. Albany also sits at the intersection of the state’s major transportation routes.
- Albany occupied a strategic location on the Hudson River. Its port was the farthest point upriver that large ships from the Atlantic Ocean could reach. Beyond Albany, these vessels could not navigate further upstream.
- At that time, Albany was far more important than New York City. From 1810 to 1860, Albany was one of the most populous cities in the United States. The city seemed poised for continued growth through expanding commerce. But New York City developed even faster, driven by the rise of Wall Street. New York City quickly surpassed the state capital. Times changed.
Today Albany remains the capital of New York State, and there’s no push to change that. If you want to explore a different side of the state, Albany makes for an interesting day trip or getaway.
