Entry requirements for the United States
What are the mandatory requirements to travel to New York? Here are the conditions you need to meet depending on your nationality.

You are a citizen of an EU country or Switzerland
Here are the requirements if you are a citizen of an EU country or Switzerland:
- Present a round-trip airline ticket to prove you will leave the United States.
- Have a valid biometric, electronic, or machine-readable passport. Without one, you must obtain a visa.
- Stay no more than 90 days in the United States.
- Apply for an ESTA authorization. Complete this form at least 72 hours before departure on the official ESTA website. Since September 8, 2010, this authorization requires a fee ($40 as of September 30, 2025). For help filling out the form, follow my step-by-step guide to completing your ESTA.
- If you have traveled to Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, or Yemen since March 1, 2011, you cannot apply for an ESTA. You must apply for a visa through US authorities. Visit the US Embassy website for your country.
- To speed up your passage through US immigration, consider using the Mobile Passport Control app. It is not required, but it allows you to use a dedicated line that can save significant time at immigration. This app is available to all travelers who have an ESTA.
