Book Your New York Trip Without a Travel Agency

Thanks to the internet, you no longer need a travel agency to book your New York trip. Here's how to save money by booking flights, hotels, transfers, and tours directly.

Book Your New York Trip Without a Travel Agency

Back in the 1990s, booking a trip to New York meant walking into a travel agency, flipping through brochures, and waiting for hotel confirmations. It was slow and expensive. Those days are long gone!
Today, you can build your own New York trip in just a few clicks, booking everything directly online. You’ll organize your travel exactly as you want it and skip the agency commissions. Here’s how, in 4 steps:

1/ Book your flight directly

  • To reserve your flight, start by checking flight comparison sites like Google Flights to see which airlines offer the lowest fares on your dates. Then go straight to the airline’s website.
  • Airlines now regularly sell tickets cheaper directly than through travel agencies. Swiss and Lufthansa, for example, charge a €16 surcharge on all tickets bought through agencies. Buy directly from Swiss or Lufthansa, and you save €16 per ticket. Air France stopped paying commissions to agencies altogether, so agencies now add their own “service fees” as they see fit. Either way, direct bookings are always cheaper.
  • Airlines also manage their seat inventory closely and regularly launch last-minute promotions on their websites.

2/ Book your hotel directly

  • For your New York hotel, use the same approach as with flights. Check prices and availability on booking sites, then verify the rate directly on the hotel’s website. You may find a better deal.
  • Hotels now regularly offer lower rates when you book directly. The Condor, a 3-star hotel, commits to rates up to 20% cheaper when booked direct. This trend is especially strong in New York, where many hotels offer special packages with free breakfast or an extra night. Some get creative: the Belleclaire, another 3-star, throws in a movie night with on-demand films, pizza, and sodas.

3/ Book your airport transfers directly

  • Now that you have your flight and hotel, arrange your transfer from the airport to your hotel. Booking in advance means no hassle with luggage when you arrive. You can reserve your airport transfer now in your own currency.
  • It’s simple: go to the New York airport transfers page and choose the option that fits your budget.

6/ Get travel insurance

  • You’ve booked everything. One last thing not to skip: travel insurance. If you’re from the European Union or Switzerland, know that European health insurance doesn’t work in the United States.
  • If you need to see a doctor or, worse, end up in an emergency room during your US trip, you pay out of pocket. Costs add up fast. A simple appendectomy can easily run over $15,000.
  • To avoid a financial disaster if something goes wrong health-wise, get travel insurance. We’ve heard from countless travelers over the years and recommend this travel insurance for the USA. It covers New York and the rest of the United States.
