What do New York City subway turnstiles look like?

  • The turnstiles at the New York City subway are large metal gates that verify passengers have paid their fares. Each turnstile unlocks as soon as your valid transit pass is detected.
  • The system is straightforward but highly effective: without a valid fare, you cannot pass through. New York’s turnstiles are also far more robust than those in many other cities—you won’t see people attempting to jump over them. Cameras and New York City police are everywhere, and the transit authority takes fare evasion seriously.
  • Since 2024, New York City subway turnstiles have been equipped to accept the new OMNY New York payment system. OMNY is the transit authority’s contactless payment system. You no longer need to insert a physical ticket or card into the turnstile, as you did before.

How to use New York City subway turnstiles

  • Your first encounter with a subway turnstile might feel a bit uncertain. Don’t worry—you’ll get the hang of it quickly.
  • One key point: with the contactless OMNY system, your options are flexible. You can use your phone, smartwatch, or even your credit card as your transit pass. You can also purchase a dedicated OMNY card from subway vending machines.
  • Simply tap your card or phone on the electronic reader at the top of the turnstile. You can’t miss the OMNY logo on the gate. Once your pass is read, the turnstile unlocks and you’re through.
