New York’s subway offers extensive free WiFi

  • The New York subway does more than move you efficiently across the city. It also gives you free WiFi. The MTA, New York’s transit authority, has deployed internet access in its stations since 2011. Full coverage by 2024! Today, the New York subway has more than 300 internet-connected stations—every single one.
  • All Manhattan stations now have WiFi. The S line, which connects Times Square and Grand Central Terminal, just got WiFi in 2024. The same goes for subway stations in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens.
  • WiFi in the New York subway is high quality, with speeds up to 150 Mbit/s per train car. That bandwidth is shared among all users on the same car.

How to connect to free subway WiFi

  • To connect free WiFi on the New York subway with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop, select the network SSID TRANSITWIRELESSWiFi. Then open your web browser and follow the instructions on the network’s login page.
  • One thing to know: internet access is available only in stations, on platforms, and in corridors—not in tunnels. The MTA says it “hopes” to expand WiFi to tunnels later. By 2024, the network has improved significantly, and you’ll find that newer lines have good coverage, including in tunnels.
  • One last tip: avoid making a reservation or a bank transaction between subway stations. If the connection drops, it could cause problems. Better to browse safely on the platform.
