Discover the organic market at Union Square in New York
In the heart of New York, you'll find a genuine organic market with quality products and a welcoming atmosphere. Here's what you need to know.

You often hear that America is all about fast food and giant shopping malls. Time to think again. During my last trip to New York, I spent time exploring the organic market at Union Square, the Union Square Greenmarket. I was captivated by the atmosphere. It’s a European-style market with a distinctly American twist! 🙂
When is the Union Square Greenmarket open?
- The Union Square Greenmarket operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in the northwest corner of Union Square Park, along 17th Street and Union Square West. Union Square West is actually a section of Broadway.
- This iconic New York market was founded in 1976. The number of vendors varies by day. If you want to see the market at its fullest with all 140 vendors, visit on Saturday. Wednesday has the second-most vendors, while Monday and Friday markets are much smaller.
What can you find at the Union Square Greenmarket?
- The market brings together up to 140 producers from New York State and neighboring states, including New Jersey. Depending on the season, you’ll find apple growers, peach farmers (with impressively large American peaches!) and all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Everything is certified organic.
- You’ll also find honey vendors, florists, bakers, cheese makers and butchers. In short, the same kind of stalls you’d see at a European market. There’s also an organic maple syrup producer from New York State.
Activities at the Union Square Greenmarket
- The Union Square Greenmarket also hosts several activities, including mini cooking classes. Head to the Market Information tent on Monday and Wednesday from April through November, 11 am to 1 pm. It’s free!
- Cookbook author signings take place on Saturday from May through November, 10 am to noon. It’s a great way to meet local food writers.
