When to apply for ESTA authorization?

Planning a trip to New York or elsewhere in the United States? Here's what you need to know about the timing for your ESTA application.

When to apply for ESTA authorization?

To travel to the United States, you must obtain an electronic travel authorization called an ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization). Visit the official U.S. government website to apply. You’ll also find a step-by-step guide to filling out the ESTA form.
When should you apply for your ESTA? U.S. authorities require that your ESTA application be submitted at least 72 hours before your departure. However, don’t cut it close. Processing times can sometimes be longer, especially since 2024. It’s recommended that you submit your ESTA application at least one month before your departure to avoid any stress.

What Not to Do

Since an ESTA is valid for 2 years, some travelers try to apply as late as possible to get an authorization with the latest possible expiration date. I’d advise against this approach—you have nothing to gain. Here’s why:

  • 1/ An ESTA is valid for 2 years and costs $40. If you’ve booked your entire trip and apply too late, you could lose far more. A denied or unapproved ESTA is not grounds for a refund on your travel bookings.
  • 2/ When you apply for your ESTA, you might discover that your passport or a family member’s passport has expired. If you need one or two months to renew a passport, you could end up without your ESTA and unable to travel.

What to Do

  • The best approach is to apply for your ESTA two to three months before your departure date. If you’ve booked flights for July, submit your application in May. You’ll have peace of mind, and if U.S. authorities conduct a thorough review or you encounter a passport issue, you’ll have time to resolve it.
  • If you prefer to apply as early as possible, that’s fine. The safest and wisest approach is to submit your application before you even book your flight and hotel, so you’re certain you can enter the United States. In any case, don’t wait until the last 72 hours.
