What is Mercer Labs?
- Mercer Labs is among New York’s newest museums. It opened on February 14, 2024 in the Financial District and blends art with technology through 15 spectacular installations.
- The museum was founded by Israeli artist Roy Nachum and real estate developer Michael Cayre. Nachum created all the installations on display. He also designed the cover of Rihanna’s album Anti. If you want to see more of his work, visit the sculpture titled “Kings,” created in 2016 outside the building at 5 Franklin Place in TriBeCa.
- The building may look familiar if you visited New York before September 2020. Mercer Labs now occupies the space that once housed the department store Century 21. The Financial District landmark has found a new purpose.
- The museum goes by the acronym MOAT, which stands for Museum Of Art and Technology—a nod to the MoMA. Whether New Yorkers will adopt the name remains to be seen.
What to See at Mercer Labs
- Mercer Labs features 15 immersive and interactive installations that merge art and technology across nearly 3,400 m² (36,600 sq ft). One room resembles a spacecraft interior, with transparent tubes running along the walls and mirrors on the sides. The space is dark, and the tubes light up as strange luminous shuttles pass through.
- Further along, you can interact with an LED wall or encounter a dove that flies from one wall to another. Another surprise: an industrial robot that builds sandcastles. The whole experience feels like a scene from Star Wars.
- Expect to be amazed throughout your visit—the creations are truly original. I won’t spoil the rest of the experience for you.
- Before you leave, stop by the gift shop. You’ll find unique items, including objects designed by Roy Nachum. It’s a world of its own.
