NYC Ferry: Another Way to Get Around New York
Since May 2017, New York has had a new mode of transport: NYC Ferry. These ferry lines are a great way to discover New York from a different perspective!

What You Need to Know About NYC Ferry
- Getting around New York isn’t limited to the subway and buses. The city also invites you to travel by water. You can cross New York Harbor on the Staten Island Ferry, take a cruise around New York Harbor, or use the newer NYC Ferry routes.
- NYC Ferry launched in May 2017 and now operates several routes connecting Manhattan, Queens, the Bronx, and Brooklyn.
- NYC Ferry is primarily used by New Yorkers. The routes serve as a time-saving option for residents traveling between neighborhoods not directly connected by subway or bus lines.
How to Take NYC Ferry
- From Manhattan, you have two departure points on the East River: Pier 11 near Wall Street, and the pier at the end of 34th Street in Midtown.
- Note: NYC Ferry operates independently, and the OMNY transit card is not accepted on the ferries. You’ll need to buy a separate ticket each time. A single trip costs $4.50 as of 2026.
- Many visitors skip NYC Ferry because they don’t want to spend an extra $4.50 on transportation. But it’s worth it. We encourage you to take at least one NYC Ferry trip during your visit.
- You can travel up the East River to the Bronx or cross New York Harbor to Long Island, passing under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. These routes aren’t offered by cruise companies.
