Why is New York nicknamed the city that never sleeps?

New York is truly a city like no other! From the moment you arrive, you'll quickly discover why New York truly earns its nickname as "the city that never sleeps"...

Why is New York nicknamed the city that never sleeps?

New Yorkers take pride in telling visitors that New York is “the city that never sleeps”—and they have good reason. Here are three big reasons why:

1/ The subway runs all night

  • Unlike London, Rome, or other major cities, the New York subway operates 24/7. No need to worry about getting stranded late at night—there’s always a train to get you home, whether it’s 3 am or 4 am.
  • Trains run less frequently in the middle of the night than during rush hour, but you won’t be waiting long. And you won’t be alone: the subway stays busy throughout the night.

2/ Restaurants open 24/7

  • Hungry at an odd hour? New York has plenty of restaurants that never close. Sarge’s Deli on 3rd Avenue between 36th and 37th Streets is one example.
  • Several retro diners stay open all night too. The Hollywood Diner sits at the corner of 6th Avenue and 16th Street, while the Skylight Diner is at 34th Street and 9th Avenue.
  • You’ll also find late-night delis and convenience stores stocked with food and drinks. No matter what time you get hungry, you can find something to eat in New York.

3/ Entertainment around the clock

  • If sleep isn’t on your agenda, you’ll never be alone on New York’s streets. Head to Times Square, where neon signs stay lit all night long.
  • Explore the city’s bars, including famous piano bars. Or climb to the rooftops—venues like the famous 230 Fifth let you stay until 2 am.
  • You’ll also notice that New York’s fire trucks, police cars, and ambulances don’t take breaks. Even in the middle of the night, their sirens wail through the streets. New York truly never sleeps—and that’s part of what makes it so special! 🙂
