How many buildings are there in New York?
New York is the city of skyscrapers! But how many buildings are there in New York? We've counted them for you and here's the answer.

New York, the city of skyscrapers
- When you think of New York’s skyscrapers, the Empire State Building, the elegant Chrysler Building, and One World Trade Center come to mind—the tallest tower in North America at 541 m (1,775 ft). But New York’s skyline extends far beyond these iconic names.
- According to a report by the State of New York, the city contains a total of one million buildings across all categories. These range from office towers in Manhattan to wooden bungalows in Staten Island.
- Of these one million buildings, more than 6,000 have 10 or more stories and are classified as high-rise buildings.
The exclusive world of skyscrapers
- However, those 6,000 buildings with 10 or more stories don’t all qualify as skyscrapers. The title is reserved for buildings that exceed 150 m (492 ft) in height.
- Roughly 280 New York buildings surpass this 150 m (492 ft) threshold. Most are located in Manhattan, particularly in the Financial District at the southern tip of the island. This is where you’ll find One World Trade Center.
- Another neighborhood famous for its skyscrapers is Midtown, dominated by the Empire State Building at 443 m (1,454 ft). Midtown is currently the neighborhood seeing the most new skyscraper development. Recent additions include Central Park Tower (472 m / 1,550 ft), 111 West 57th Street (435 m / 1,428 ft), and One Vanderbilt (427 m / 1,401 ft), which features an observation deck called SUMMIT One Vanderbilt.
