Why visit the FDNY 10 House?

  • New York has many firehouses you can visit. Find detailed tips and addresses in our guide on visiting firehouses in New York.
  • One firehouse stands apart: FDNY 10 House, in the Financial District at the southern tip of Manhattan. Located at 124 Liberty Street, at the southeast corner of the 9/11 Memorial, this small station was the closest to the World Trade Center. On September 11, 2001, firefighters from Company 10 were the first to respond. Of the 343 firefighters who died in the rescue operations, 6 belonged to 10 House.
  • Years have passed, but the memory of the September 11 attacks remains vivid for New York firefighters, especially those at 10 House. To understand 9/11, a visit here is essential.

What to see at FDNY 10 House

  • In memory of September 11, a massive American flag covers both garage doors. It’s striking. Visit in the morning when sunlight illuminates the mural.
  • On the side of 10 House, at the corner of Liberty Street and Greenwich Street, you’ll find the FDNY Memorial Wall, dedicated to New York firefighters. This bronze bas-relief, 17 meters (56 feet) long, depicts the Twin Towers in flames and the sacrifice of firefighters. The sculpture was created by Hungarian-born artist Joseph Petrovics, who also created works for St. John the Divine Cathedral in New York.
  • If you’re lucky and the garage doors are open, you may see inside 10 House. On the right, you’ll spot firefighter helmets from around the world hanging from the ceiling, including one from Paris firefighters. These are exchanges between fire departments.
  • The left wall holds a large 9/11 memorial. Commemorative plaques honor the 6 firefighters from 10 House who died on September 11, 2001. Carefully preserved in cases are remnants of a Liberty Street street sign and a truck door, twisted during the collapse of the Twin Towers.
  • Important: even if doors are open, don’t enter without asking the firefighters on duty. You could face trouble. If you ask, they’ll usually let you in to see the memorial. Don’t forget to say “thank you” when you leave.
