The 4 unusual details to spot on Brooklyn Bridge
Brooklyn Bridge is a must-walk with stunning views of New York. But don't miss these 4 hidden details that most tourists overlook...

Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge is one of the highlights of a New York visit. This is where it hits you: you’re really here, in New York. The Brooklyn Bridge offers stunning views of the Financial District skyline, including One World Trade Center. You’ll also see Midtown, with the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, and New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty. All of New York spreads out before you.
But the bridge itself deserves a closer look. Here are 4 interesting details that most visitors miss while taking in the views.
1/ The Brooklyn Border
The Brooklyn Bridge connects Manhattan to Brooklyn, so there’s a boundary between these two major New York boroughs. You’ll find the Brooklyn border marker at the bridge entrance on the Brooklyn side.
2/ Humorous Warnings
Since October 2016, New York City has been removing love locks that visitors attach to the bridge. The locks are taken down regularly, and if you’re caught placing one, the fine is $100. But the city also has a sense of humor: signs read “No locks – Yes lox.” It’s a play on words—lox is the smoked salmon served on bagels.
3/ A Tribute to Frank Farrington
Frank Farrington’s name may not ring a bell, but this mechanical engineer achieved a first. In 1876, he became the first person to cross the East River by walking along a cable. The Brooklyn Bridge was still under construction at the time.
4/ The Bridge Dedication Plaque
On the bridge’s eastern tower, look for the large plaque that few visitors notice: the dedication plaques from the bridge’s opening. You’ll see that the Brooklyn Bridge was inaugurated in 1883 by the cities of New York and Brooklyn. At the bottom, you’ll find the names of the two engineers who designed it: John Augustus Roebling, who died in 1869 just three weeks after his foot was crushed by a ferry, and Washington Roebling, his son.
