Everything you need to know about TSA locks
Traveling to New York or elsewhere in the United States? Your luggage must be easily opened by authorities. Equip your suitcase with a TSA lock!

What is a TSA lock?
- A TSA lock looks like a standard padlock, but with one key difference: US authorities can open it to inspect your luggage, check the contents, and then lock it again.
- The lock takes its name from the Transportation Security Administration, the US agency responsible for transport security.
- To spot a TSA lock, look for a small red diamond-shaped logo on the padlock.
Is a TSA lock required?
- TSA standards were introduced as part of security measures adopted by the United States after the September 11, 2001 attacks to strengthen airport security. All passengers traveling to or through the United States must have luggage that can be opened by authorities. This is what a TSA lock allows.
- This rule applies regardless of which airline you fly with, whether it’s a US carrier or a European or international airline.
- The TSA lock itself is not mandatory: what’s required is that US authorities can open your suitcase. A TSA lock is the only way to travel with a locked suitcase while still allowing customs officials to access it.
What happens if your lock is not TSA-approved?
Two scenarios if you don’t have a TSA lock, latch, or strap on your suitcase:
- If your suitcase is unlocked and can be opened without a key or code, authorities can inspect it. No problem.
- If your suitcase is locked with a key or code that is not TSA-compliant, authorities may break the lock to inspect the contents. A locked suitcase without TSA approval will likely draw extra attention. If you don’t follow the rule, you risk arriving with a damaged suitcase.
A TSA lock doesn’t provide better security for your luggage. It simply makes the work easier for US customs officials and helps prevent your suitcase from being damaged during inspection.
How to tell if your suitcase was opened
- If US authorities opened your suitcase, you’ll notice a small latch or indicator on your lock or latch. Check your lock’s instructions to see how this indicator appears on your model.
- You’ll also find a small notice from US authorities inside your suitcase indicating it was opened.
Where to buy a TSA lock
- You can find TSA locks in luggage shops, supermarkets, and online retailers. Prices vary depending on the lock size and opening mechanism (key or combination, 3 or 4 digits).
- TSA locks are also sold in airports and major train stations, but they cost more. It’s better to buy your lock in advance.
- If you have an older suitcase without a lock or with an outdated locking system, you have two options: check your suitcase without locking it, or secure it with a TSA-approved strap with a padlock. The strap option is more expensive.
