How long should you spend in New York?

  • First-time visitors to New York often wonder how long to stay. On the New York forum, we see plenty of questions about this—many asking whether 5 days is enough to see everything.
So how long should you spend in New York on your first visit? In my view, one week is the minimum.
  • One week is truly the bare minimum to see the essentials of New York. There’s so much to do, as you’ll discover in our New York guide: the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, One World Trade Center, Times Square… Plus museums, different neighborhoods from Greenwich Village to Brooklyn, shopping, and countless day trips.
  • In a week, you’ll also have time to join our guides for one or more guided tours of New York. Explore the major sights and venture beyond the usual routes with our Brooklyn guided tour or Queens guided tour. I’d also recommend our Red Hook guided tour for a different perspective on New York Harbor.
  • Check out our one-week New York itinerary—you’ll see there’s plenty to keep you busy!

What’s the ideal length of stay?

  • Less than a week in New York is too short. You won’t have time to see everything, and you’ll spend much of your trip adjusting to the time difference. More importantly, if you’re only here 4 or 5 days, you can’t really justify the flight—if you’re paying for airfare, you might as well stay longer.
  • So what’s the ideal length? Ten to 15 days is perfect for discovering everything without rushing. You’ll adjust to the time zone and settle into the New York rhythm.
  • One thing to know: as a tourist, you can stay up to 3 months in the United States. If you can, take advantage of it!
