When to visit Wall Street and New York’s Financial District?

Here's how to explore New York's Financial District without finding yourself wandering empty, lifeless streets.

When to visit Wall Street and New York’s Financial District?

New York’s Financial District deserves at least half a day of exploration. With its towering buildings and narrow streets, there’s plenty to see. However, I often notice visitors making mistakes about when and how to visit—questions that come up regularly on the New York forum and our Destination New York Facebook group. Here are my 5 tips for experiencing the Financial District at its best.

1/ Get there early for the bull

  • The famous Charging Bull sits at the entrance to the Financial District and draws crowds all day long. To photograph it without a mob of tourists, arrive very early in the morning.
  • Tip: combine a visit to the bull with the first ferry to the Statue of Liberty. This way you won’t need to come back to this area later. That said, seeing the bull surrounded by excited tourists during the day is quite a spectacle in itself if you happen to pass through again.

2/ Visit on a weekday

  • To see the streets come alive with bankers and business professionals rushing between meetings, visit the Financial District on a weekday. On Saturday and Sunday, most businesses close and you’ll find only lost tourists wandering empty streets.

3/ Follow stock market hours

  • To spot traders in their colorful vests taking a cigarette break on Wall Street, keep the stock exchange hours in mind. The New York Stock Exchange is open Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4 pm. After 4 pm, the Financial District empties out fast.
  • Unfortunately, you cannot visit inside the New York Stock Exchange. It has been closed to the public since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

4/ Plan lunch in the neighborhood

  • To experience the neighborhood like a local, visit Wall Street late in the morning and then grab lunch at one of the area’s small restaurants. You’ll be surrounded by bankers and business professionals. That said, most of them have very little time for a leisurely meal. You’ll spot them lined up at the food trucks and mobile carts instead.
  • Tip: the largest concentration of food trucks clusters around Zuccotti Square, between Broadway and Trinity Place, just steps from the World Trade Center. There’s something for every taste, and with sandwich in hand, you can settle onto one of the park benches.

5/ Book early to see the Federal Reserve

  • Just steps from Wall Street stands the austere building of the Federal Reserve, the institution responsible for issuing dollars and maintaining the country’s monetary stability. The Fed also stores gold in its vaults—reserves belonging to the US government and other nations. The building is worth a visit for its architecture, inspired by a medieval castle.
  • Tours are free but require advance booking. There is only one tour per day, Monday to Friday, from 1 pm to 2 pm. Note: as of 2024, tours are available only for school groups. A great opportunity if you’re visiting New York with students.
