How to visit the UN headquarters in New York?

If you follow world news and international affairs, a visit to the UN headquarters in New York is well worth your time. This iconic building opened in 1951 and sits in the heart of Manhattan, in Midtown, along the East River.
This international territory, technically outside US jurisdiction, houses the UN’s five main bodies, including the Security Council and General Assembly—the ones you see regularly in the news.
Though the UN headquarters is a sensitive, highly secure location, it welcomes visitors: over a million people tour it each year. Here’s how to do it.

How to book your UN tour

  • The UN is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
  • All tours are guided and must be booked in advance on the official UN website. Click the “Book now” button to access the booking system, which operates in English.
  • Admission costs $26 for adults, $18 for seniors (60+) and students, and $15 for children aged 5–12. Children under 5 are not permitted. Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
  • Tours open for booking three months in advance. About forty tours depart daily, with tours available in various languages. Each tour lasts 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the group’s questions and interests.
  • Your guided tour will take you through the impressive General Assembly hall, the striking Security Council chamber, the Economic and Social Council room, and the Trusteeship Council chamber. This tour genuinely immerses you in the center of global affairs—truly fascinating.

What to know before you visit

  • Arrive at the UN headquarters at least one hour before your tour time. Go to the Visitor Check-in Office at the corner of 45th Street and 1st Avenue, and present your booking confirmation and a valid ID—passport, national ID card, or driver’s license. You’ll receive a Security Pass.
  • Next, you’ll cross the street to pass through security screening before entering the main building. Like airport security, water bottles are not allowed. Food is also prohibited.
  • Tours depart from the main lobby. Make the most of your tour and ask your guide any questions you have.
  • After your tour, take time to visit the UN gift shop in the basement of the main building. You’ll find postcards with UN stamps and other souvenirs.
