Experience Gospel Music in Harlem on Days Other Than Sunday

Want to hear a Gospel choir in Harlem but Sunday doesn't work for you? Here's how to experience Gospel music on a different day of the week.

Experience Gospel Music in Harlem on Days Other Than Sunday

When do Gospel services happen in New York?

  • Sunday is Gospel day in Harlem. You’ve probably heard about Gospel services, but if you’ve never experienced one, it’s worth doing—regardless of your faith. The powerful singing, spiritual energy, and warmth of these services create something truly memorable.
  • The catch for visitors: Gospel services only happen on Sundays. If your flight arrives or departs on a Sunday, or you have other plans that day, you’ll miss out. That’s unfortunate, because Gospel services are also a chance to explore a neighborhood that feels very different from the rest of New York.

Gospel on other days of the week

  • If you can’t make it to Harlem on Sunday, join our Wednesday Harlem tour with a Gospel concert. You’ll explore the neighborhood with full context and history, then your guide takes you to a church for a Gospel concert. Note: this is a concert, not a service, so you skip the sermon and religious elements—perfect for families. Learn more on the Harlem Gospel tour page.
  • Another option: Gospel music on Tuesday evenings at Times Square Church, located at 701 7th Avenue. It’s not the same as a Gospel service in Harlem, but it gives you a taste of Gospel singing. You’ll miss the Harlem experience, but it works if Sunday or Wednesday don’t fit your schedule.
  • Tip: expect many tourists here—the church sits in Times Square, where most of New York’s hotels are concentrated. This won’t feel like an authentic service, but it might inspire you to experience a real Gospel service on your next trip to New York.
