Best time to visit SUMMIT at One Vanderbilt in New York
SUMMIT One Vanderbilt observatory is one of New York's must-see attractions. When should you visit? Here are the best times to go.

Open since September 2021, the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt observatory has become one of New York’s top attractions. It offers stunning views of the city, presented with equally spectacular staging. But when should you visit? There’s no single answer—the best time depends on what you want to see.
1/ Morning for views of Lower Manhattan
- For the best views of Lower Manhattan, visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt in the morning. Morning light illuminates the Empire State Building, Midtown, and Lower Manhattan. You’ll see the towers of the Financial District and One World Trade Center clearly in the distance. You’ll also see the southern East River and the Brooklyn Bridge.
- Morning advantage: the observatory is less crowded than later in the day, making it easier to take photos and enjoy the different art installations. Afterward, you can explore the Midtown neighborhood.
2/ Afternoon for views of the Chrysler Building
- As the sun moves across the sky, the view from SUMMIT One Vanderbilt changes completely in the afternoon—Lower Manhattan will be backlit. But the afternoon gives you full sun on the nearby Chrysler Building. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt offers an incredible view of the Chrysler Building, so close it feels within arm’s reach.
- Afternoon is also the best time to see Central Park and Upper Manhattan, with the Upper East Side and Upper West Side beautifully lit. You’ll also enjoy views of Queens and Brooklyn neighborhoods, plus the boat traffic on the East River.

3/ Sunset from SUMMIT One Vanderbilt
- Another prime time to visit SUMMIT One Vanderbilt: sunset. It’s truly spectacular. Be aware, though: sunset draws crowds, so you won’t be alone. Also, the observatory charges a higher price for sunset visits.
- The experience remains magical. Once the sun sets, stay a bit longer to watch New York light up.
