Best spots for sunset in New York
In New York, sunsets are spectacular. But you need to be in the right place! Here are the 5 spots I recommend for an unforgettable sunset experience.

In New York, take time to watch a sunset. It’s a magical experience—if you’re in the right spot. Here are my 5 favorite places for a spectacular sunset:
1/ Top of the Rock
From the Top of the Rock, you’ll enjoy one of the best views in New York. The Empire State Building faces you directly, Manhattan spreads below, and the towers of the Financial District rise in the distance. The observatory’s upper terrace has no railings or glass—perfect for unobstructed views and photos. Watch the sun sink toward New Jersey, turning the buildings red. Stunning.
BOOK YOUR TICKETS: Visit the Top of the Rock ticket page.
2/ One World Observatory
Perched atop One World Trade Center, the tallest building in North America, One World Observatory offers views of the sunset over New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty. A unique vantage point and equally spectacular setting. Looking north, you’ll also see the last rays of sunlight illuminate the Empire State Building and Midtown’s skyline, including the gleaming spire of the Chrysler Building.
BOOK YOUR TICKETS: Visit the One World Observatory ticket page.
3/ Brooklyn Heights
Another excellent spot: the Brooklyn Heights Promenade in Brooklyn. Take the subway to Clark Street and head toward the East River. You’ll reach a waterfront walkway with the Financial District directly across. Depending on the season, you’ll see the sun disappear at the horizon or behind the skyline, creating a striking silhouette effect. After dark, consider crossing the Brooklyn Bridge back into Manhattan.
4/ Sunset Cruise
For a unique sunset experience, try the Harbor Lights Cruise. This 2-hour cruise departs from Pier 83 in Midtown, travels up the Hudson River, then heads toward the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge. Perfect for spectacular photos.
BOOK YOUR TICKETS: This is one of New York’s most popular cruises. Reserve in advance via the Harbor Lights sunset cruise page.
5/ Gantry Plaza State Park
Finally, here’s a lesser-known gem: Gantry Plaza State Park in Queens. This waterfront park sits directly across from Midtown and the United Nations headquarters. Watch the sun sink behind Midtown’s towers, the Empire State Building, and the Chrysler Building, creating a beautiful silhouette effect.
