Chess Forum: New York’s specialist chess shop

What is Chess Forum?

  • Chess Forum is a New York shop dedicated entirely to chess. Yes, you read that right: they sell almost nothing but chess sets. Only in New York!
  • This unique shop sits in the heart of Greenwich Village, at 219 Thompson Street, one block south of Washington Square Park. Founded in 1972, it quickly became the headquarters for chess enthusiasts—both locals and visitors.
  • Chess Forum stocks an enormous range of boards and pieces, whether you want a classic design or something more playful. The bookshop section offers plenty of chess literature. Plus, they carry a nice selection of travel chess sets, so you can play anywhere.
  • The shop does make one exception to chess by stocking other board games. You’ll find backgammon boards and accessories, dominoes, Go sets, Mahjong, and card games.

Play Chess in New York!

  • Chess Forum is more than just a shop. It’s a welcoming space where players can come in, play a game, and grab a coffee. Walk in and don’t be shy!
  • If you’re lucky, you might spot a celebrity. Chess champion Bobby Fischer was a regular here, as were filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and artist Marcel Duchamp.
  • The Thompson Street shop is open daily year-round, from noon to midnight. That gives you plenty of time to finish your game! One rule applies though: “Smart people not smart phones”—no cell phones allowed.
