5 reasons to visit New York in September
September is an excellent time to visit New York! Here are 5 reasons to make the trip.

1/ Fewer crowds than in July and August
- Looking for the best time to visit New York? September is an excellent choice.
- September falls outside American and European school holidays, so you’ll avoid the peak summer rush. Expect shorter lines at major attractions like the Statue of Liberty and noticeably fewer tourists than in July and August. The difference is real.

2/ Comfortable temperatures
- September brings pleasant weather to New York, with mild Indian summer conditions.
- Average high temperatures reach 24°C (75°F) in September, compared to 28°C (82°F) in July and August. Since New York subway platforms can become stifling in summer heat without air conditioning, those few degrees cooler make a real difference.

3/ The September 11 anniversary
- On September 11, New Yorkers commemorate the anniversary of the 2001 attacks, which claimed nearly 3,000 lives.
- Since 2001, a ceremony brings together officials, families of victims, and visitors at the site of the attacks. See my article if you’d like to attend the September 11 ceremony in New York.
- The day concludes with the “Tribute in Light”—two powerful beams of blue light symbolizing the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. These ghostly silhouettes are unforgettable.

4/ The Feast of San Gennaro in Little Italy
- September is a special month for New York’s Italian community. The month celebrates the Feast of San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples.
- Expect religious processions, tastings of Italian specialties, and concerts every evening on a stage at the corner of Mott and Grand Streets. Head to Little Italy!

5/ Labor Day sales
- If shopping is on your agenda, September is the month to visit. For Labor Day, stores offer significant discounts to clear out summer inventory.
- Labor Day falls on the first Monday of September, and sales run throughout the weekend. Check our New York shopping guide to find the best stores and brands.
