When is Memorial Day?

  • Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May. It applies across all US states. In 2027, Memorial Day falls on May 31.
  • This movable date was set in 1971 to give Americans a three-day weekend. New York empties out a bit as residents head away for the holiday.

What is Memorial Day?

  • This federal holiday honors all US military personnel who died in combat across all conflicts worldwide.
  • The tradition began in 1868, three years after the Civil War ended. The goal was to honor soldiers from both sides and promote reconciliation between North and South. Originally, the holiday was observed on May 30 and called Decoration Day. Why May 30? Precisely because it didn’t coincide with any particular battle or event.

How is Memorial Day celebrated?

  • The nation’s capital, Washington, hosts major commemorations. The US President participates in a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery.
  • In New York and many other US cities, military parades take place. If you’re in New York that day, head to Brooklyn for the city’s main parade, organized by the Memorial Day Parade Committee. The 159th edition starts at 11 am at the corner of 3rd Avenue and 78th Street in Brooklyn.
  • Beyond the official commemorations, Memorial Day unofficially marks the start of summer. Many venues and attractions switch to summer hours that weekend. Governors Island is one example, extending its hours for evening visits. Summer is here.
