In the heart of New York, Times Square is home to a crowd of superheroes... Here's what you need to know about the famous Times Square characters.

How to take a photo with Times Square characters?

Superman, Hulk, Elmo, Spider-Man, SpongeBob, Darth Vader, Captain America… When you visit Times Square, you’ll spot these famous characters waiting to pose for photos. Before you take a selfie or snap pictures of your kids with them, there are a few rules to know.

Until 2016, Times Square had real problems with these costumed performers. Things got so tense that a tourist and Spider-Man actually got into a fight in 2015 over a tip. On one side, Times Square promoters were telling visitors not to tip the characters. On the other, the performers were pushing hard for tips in exchange for photos.

New rules since 2016

In 2016, New York City decided to regulate the performers. Here’s how it works now:

  • The city marked two green zones on the ground with painted lines. Performers must stay within these areas: one on the south side of Times Square at 42nd Street, and another at 46th Street. If you see a character outside these zones, don’t take a photo with them—they’re not authorized.
  • Second, tipping is now required when you take a photo. If you want a picture, you must tip. The more characters in your photo, the more you pay. Budget at least $2 to $3 per character. It’s mandatory.

These rules have made things much more peaceful. Now both performers and visitors know what to expect.

One more thing: remember that these costumed people aren’t here for fun. Most are undocumented immigrants trying to make a few dollars. It’s the American dream meeting reality—and that’s New York.
