Have you traveled to the Middle East and want to visit the United States? Be aware that certain foreign stamps in your passport may cause problems.

Which passport stamps prevent entry to the USA?

Countries that may prevent you from traveling to the United States

  • If you’re a European citizen, you need travel authorization to enter the United States: the ESTA form. This approval waives the visa requirement and lets you stay in the US for up to 90 days with your passport and ESTA. That’s the basic rule.
  • Since January 21, 2016, US authorities have added a restriction: you cannot apply for ESTA if you have traveled to Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, or Yemen since March 1, 2011. Iran is particularly problematic because many Europeans vacation there, especially since the country opened to tourism.
  • Since January 2021, the US also requires a visa for anyone who has traveled to Cuba since January 12, 2021, whether for vacation or work. This affects many European tourists as well. See our article on traveling to the US after visiting Cuba. This rule remains in effect in 2024 and for 2025 travel.
  • If your passport has a stamp from any of these 7 countries, you cannot enter US territory with an ESTA.
  • Stamps from all other countries pose no problem—including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, Dubai, Israel, Qatar, and Oman. If you’ve traveled to any of these, you can apply for ESTA without issue. Despite the war in Ukraine, Russian stamps and visas are also not a problem.

What to do if you have a “restricted” stamp on your passport

  • If your passport has a stamp from one of these 7 countries, here’s what you need to do: apply for a visa at the nearest US consulate. You’ll have an interview where officials will ask about the purpose of your trip.
  • If you traveled to Iran or Cuba for tourism, bring proof—your travel agency receipt or photos. If you traveled for work, especially in petrochemicals, bring documentation for that too. The visa process is more involved than ESTA.
