Does your passport need to be valid 6 months after returning from the USA?
Online information is contradictory about this tricky question! I investigated and here are the official positions from the US and French authorities.

US passport validity requirements
- Does your passport need to be valid for 6 months after you return from the United States, or is a passport valid for the duration of your stay enough? This question has sparked endless debate on the blog forum and our Destination New York Facebook group. To settle this once and for all, I asked the head of the US tourism office in France.
- The answer is clear: France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Canada are part of the “6-Month Club”, a group of 126 countries whose citizens do not need a passport valid for more than 6 months to travel to the United States. A passport valid for the duration of your stay is all you need.
The complete list of 6-Month Club members
The full list of 6-Month Club members is available on the US Customs and Border Protection website, the US agency responsible for customs and border control. All European countries are included on this list.
Here are the French-speaking countries in the “6-Month Club”, in alphabetical order:
- Andorra
- Belgium
- Canada
- Côte d’Ivoire
- France
- Gabon
- Haiti
- Mauritius
- Lebanon
- Luxembourg
- Madagascar
- Monaco
- Switzerland
- Tunisia
Note that Algeria and Morocco are not on this list. If you hold Algerian or Moroccan nationality, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your return date.
Why does this question cause so much confusion?
- Although the 6-Month Club list is clearly established by US authorities, why does the question continue to create doubt and debate? The reason is simple: the official French government website displays a warning on its page about travel requirements to the United States. According to this site, “it is recommended to have a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining on your departure date from the United States”.
- US authorities have asked the French government website several times to correct this statement, but nothing has changed. You can disregard this warning and follow the official position of US authorities instead. Only the official 6-Month Club list applies. We update it as needed.
- So why does the French government insist? I received an explanation from a French diplomat who told me that traveling with a passport valid for 6 months after your departure date protects you in case of serious illness during your stay. If you became seriously ill in the US and needed hospitalization, this would prevent passport expiration from becoming an additional administrative problem on top of a health crisis. French authorities recommend playing it safe by having a passport valid for 6 months after your departure date. The choice is yours.
