How long is an ESTA valid?

Can you return to the United States a few months or weeks after a previous trip? The question feels even more stressful if you’re planning a second trip to New York within the same year.
The rules are straightforward: your ESTA authorization is valid for 2 years, and you have every right to make as many trips to the United States as you want during that period. There is no official limit. You can spend a week in New York in April, then 15 days in August and another week in December.
That’s the principle. Keep in mind, though, that entry to the United States depends on the decision of the immigration officer who will review your case when you arrive. There is one limit: an ESTA is not a residence permit or a green card.

All your stays in the United States are recorded in your file. Based on this history, the immigration officer will assess whether you’re coming for leisure or attempting to immigrate illegally. Two key rules:
Do not stay longer than 90 days at a time, and avoid stringing together consecutive 90-day stays. Crossing into Canada for 2 days and then returning to the US for another 90 days will quickly signal that you intend to settle in the United States.
If the immigration officer has doubts, be ready to prove you’re on vacation and not seeking work or illegal residency. Officers often verify this by asking about your profession and what you do for a living.
If the officer mentions you’ve visited several times recently, simply explain that you want to explore more of the United States and that there’s still plenty you haven’t seen. Tell them you enjoy spending your vacations in New York or elsewhere. The key word: “vacation.” Whatever you do, don’t lie—that’s when real trouble starts.
Bottom line: stop worrying. As long as you’re genuinely coming to the United States for vacation, you’ll have no problems. However, if you plan to settle in the United States, apply for the appropriate visa. If caught misusing an ESTA, you risk up to 10 years of entry ban—I’ve unfortunately seen it happen.
