Lemonade: the must-try drink in New York
In New York, you must taste lemonade. A drink that has nothing to do with European lemonade.

What Is Lemonade?
- New York lemonade is a favorite drink—but watch out for translation confusion. American “lemonade” is nothing like European lemonade. It’s simply fresh lemon juice mixed with a simple syrup made from water and sugar. It’s incredibly refreshing on a hot day.
- You’ll find lemonade everywhere in New York. In restaurants, just order it—and make sure to pronounce it “luh-muh-NAYD” clearly. You can also ask for “no ice” if you want to avoid a glass that’s half full of ice cubes. Better yet, ask for “ice in a separate glass” so you can add it yourself. This drink is best served cold.
- You’ll also find several bottled brands in delis and drugstores throughout New York. The most popular is Snapple, which makes classic lemonade and also a pink version that’s a bit sweeter. Both are excellent.
- Two other brands worth trying are Purity, a New York company that makes organic drinks, and Hubert’s Lemonade from California. You might find yourself hooked. There’s nothing quite like a cold glass while sitting on a bench in Central Park or on the High Line.
Homemade Lemonade Recipe
Missing New York lemonade back home? Make it yourself. Here’s how:
- Combine 6 parts water with 1.5 parts sugar (use any consistent measure—a small glass works fine).
- Bring the water to a boil to dissolve the sugar.
- Squeeze fresh lemons to get 1.5 parts juice.
- Mix the lemon juice with the syrup.
- Chill and serve. Tip: drink homemade lemonade soon after making it—it doesn’t keep long in the refrigerator.
