Tickets for New York Red Bulls Football Matches

What You Need to Know About the New York Red Bulls

• The New York Red Bulls are New York’s primary soccer team. Note: “soccer” is the American term for what Europeans call football. Americans use “football” to refer to American football, a different sport entirely.
• The New York Red Bulls were founded in 1996 as the New York/New Jersey MetroStars. In 2006, the Austrian energy drink company Red Bull purchased the team, and it was renamed accordingly. The acquisition price was $100 million.
• The team plays in Major League Soccer, the top division of North American professional soccer. The league itself is relatively young, having been established in 1993. Soccer continues to grow in popularity across the United States.
• The New York Red Bulls are based in Harrison, New Jersey, a few kilometers from New York near Newark Airport. Despite their New Jersey location, the team proudly represents New York. Similarly, the New York Giants and New York Jets, New York’s two American football teams, also play in New Jersey.
• The New York Red Bulls have attracted many soccer legends who came to finish their careers in the American league. Notable players include Frenchman Thierry Henry, Youri Djorkaef, Italian Roberto Donadoni, German Lothar Matthäus, and Brazilian Juninho.
• The Red Bulls’ trophy cabinet is still relatively modest. The team has won the national championship once, in 2013. New York has also reached the CONCACAF Champions League, the American equivalent of Europe’s Champions League, five times. However, they have never advanced beyond the semifinals. The team clearly needs its supporters!
