Lobster Roll: The Best Lobster Sandwiches in New York

What Is a Lobster Roll in New York?

  • The lobster roll is believed to have been invented in Connecticut in 1929. Since then, this toasted brioche bread has been filled with lobster meat dressed in mayonnaise or melted butter. Often served with coleslaw or chips, it’s the perfect meal to refuel after exploring the city.
  • A lobster roll is a must-try in New York, and the prices are very reasonable. Here are my three favorite spots in the city.

The 3 Best Places for a Lobster Roll in New York

  1. Luke's Lobster

I rarely recommend chain restaurants, but Luke’s Lobster is a reliable choice if you’re watching your budget. Expect to spend around $20 for a lobster sandwich with a side and a drink. You’ll find about ten locations across Manhattan. Tip: when you walk across Brooklyn Bridge, stop at their stand beneath the bridge on the Brooklyn side. Just steps away, Brooklyn Bridge Park has plenty of seating where you can eat with stunning views of the city.

  2. North River Lobster Company

If you want to dine on the water, head to North River Lobster Company. Located at Pier 81, this restaurant boat offers cruises on the Hudson River for lunch, cocktails, or dinner. The boat operates in summer (check their website for hours), and the 45-minute cruise is included with your meal. The atmosphere is more casual and relaxed than Pearl. Tip: arrive early to secure a spot on the boat’s third level.

  3. Brooklyn Crab

For me, there’s nothing better than eating lobster by the water. And for that, I have the perfect summer spot. Head to Brooklyn. Brooklyn Crab offers views of the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center, Manhattan’s tallest building. The restaurant specializes in seafood. On the menu: oysters, lobster, crab, and their famous sandwich. Tip: don’t miss the restaurant’s mini-golf course with your kids. Afterward, explore Red Hook and its converted warehouses. It’s a neighborhood in constant transformation.
