Winner of the Golden Lion at the 2019 Venice Film Festival and released in October, Joker has already become a phenomenon. Director Todd Phillips’ film tells the story of Arthur Fleck’s descent into darkness—a failed comedian who becomes the Joker, a ruthless killer and sworn enemy of Batman. To follow in the Joker’s footsteps, head to the heart of Gotham City, otherwise known as New York City! Thanks to Sébastien for the photos. 🙂

The Joker’s Stairs in New York: West 167th Street

  • The staircase featured on the poster, in the trailer, and in one of the film’s most iconic scenes is located in the Bronx. The stairs sit between two buildings on 167th Street, between Anderson and Shakespeare Avenues.
  • You’re unlikely to be alone. With the film’s success, tourists from around the world flock here to pose for photos. Some even recreate the now-famous Joker dance, playing Rock & Roll Part 2, Gary Glitter’s equally famous track.

The Joker’s Apartment: 1140 Anderson Avenue

  • The building where Arthur Fleck lives is just steps away from the stairs, at 1140 Anderson Avenue. You’ll immediately recognize the three arches guarding the building’s entrance.

The Restaurant Where Arthur Meets Sophie: 3396 Jerome Avenue

  • Before his life changes, Arthur Fleck flirts with a young neighbor, Sophie Dumond. He invites her to Twin Donut, a donut shop at 3396 Jerome Avenue in northern Bronx.
  • You’ll need some motivation to visit: Twin Donut Plus is about 20 minutes by subway from the Joker’s apartment. Take the 4 line, get off at Mosholu Parkway, and walk about 2 minutes. One thing to know: while the building still stands, the shop closed abruptly in 2018. A Joker move?

The Hospital: Brooklyn Army Terminal

  • After exploring the Bronx, head to Brooklyn. Arkham State Hospital, where Arthur Fleck seeks treatment for his dark thoughts, is actually the Brooklyn Army Terminal. In the film, the building was digitally enlarged. Address: 5798 1st Avenue, Brooklyn.

The Chase Scene: Under the Manhattan Bridge Arch

  • The Manhattan Bridge also appears in the film. The scene where Arthur Fleck runs dressed as a clown with a bag in hand takes place under the arch of one of the bridge’s supports. To relive the scene, head to the Lower East Side neighborhood at 199 Cherry Street. Just watch out for pursuers!

The Wayne Hall Event: Jersey City Courthouse

  • If you’re a true Joker fan, continue your pilgrimage to New Jersey. First stop: Jersey City to see Wayne Hall. It’s actually the imposing facade of the Hudson County Courthouse. This is where Arthur Fleck descends the red carpet doing cartwheels.

The Sign Scene: Market Street in Newark

  • Before executing his sinister plans, Arthur Fleck moves from one odd job to another. Here he is dressed as a clown, working as a human billboard carrying an advertising sign. One day, a group of young men harass him and steal his sign.
  • The scene takes place in Newark’s Central Business District, in front of 197 Market Street.
