The Story of Ghost

  • Released in 1990, Ghost was directed by American filmmaker Jerry Zucker, who also made the comedy film Airplane! in 1980. The tone shifts dramatically here: while Ghost includes plenty of humorous moments, it’s fundamentally a romance.
  • The story centers on Sam Wheat (Patrick Swayze) and his girlfriend Molly Jensen (Demi Moore). He’s a banker; she’s an artist. The couple has just moved into an apartment in the heart of Manhattan, and nothing seems to stand in the way of their happiness. Then Sam notices suspicious transactions on some accounts at his bank. He mentions this to his friend and colleague Carl Bruner (Anthony Goldwyn), who offers his help. One evening, while Sam and Molly are walking through the street, Sam is shot by a mugger who steals his wallet. Sam dies instantly, yet he remains conscious, watching the entire scene unfold. He has become a ghost.
  • Sam is now condemned to wander the streets of New York, unable to communicate with anyone. Then he discovers an advertisement for an eccentric and somewhat dishonest psychic, Oda Mae Brown (Whoopi Goldberg). Can Sam find a way to reach her?

New York in Ghost

  • To establish Sam’s character as a banker, the film opens in Manhattan’s financial district. Sam and Carl exit the Broad Street subway station and walk along Wall Street. Near the end of the film, you’ll also see the steps of Federal Hall, facing the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Most of the action takes place in SoHo. Sam and Molly’s apartment is located at 102 Prince Street, at the corner of Greene Street. It’s a beautiful building typical of the neighborhood, with its address painted in gold lettering.
  • If you want to see the location of the murder scene, visit Crosby Street at night.
  • The Italian restaurant where psychic Oda meets Molly closed in 2015. Mezzogiorno Restaurant was located at 195 Spring Street. It was replaced by Bombay Bread Bar, which kept the turquoise blue storefront color but has also since closed.
