  • Founded in 1891, the New York Botanical Garden spans 100 hectares (247 acres). It’s the largest botanical garden in the United States and one of the largest in the world. The garden has been designated a historic landmark since 1967.

What to see at the New York Botanical Garden

  • Don’t miss the impressive Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, a vast greenhouse with architecture inspired by the Italian Renaissance. It’s modeled after the Royal Botanic Garden at Kew, near London. Inside, you’ll find an extraordinary collection of tropical plants, cacti, and desert species. Also look for the pools with their stunning water lilies and elegant lotus flowers in summer.
  • Nearby, explore the Rock Garden, an alpine garden built in 1931. Plants and flowers grow between stones and rocky crevices.
  • Be sure to visit the impressive building housing the library. The LuEsther T. Mertz Library, founded in 1899, is the most important botanical library in America, with more than 550,000 books and 11 million documents in its archives.
