The Shed: A New Cultural Center in New York
The Shed is a museum like no other! This venue brings together all artistic disciplines in a futuristic space. Head to Hudson Yards to discover it.

What to Know About The Shed
- The Shed is a cultural center that opened on April 5, 2019 in New York. It’s located in Hudson Yards, a new neighborhood on Manhattan’s West Side, between Midtown and the Hudson River. The Shed sits directly across from the Vessel, Hudson Yards’ iconic sculpture and observation structure.
- The Shed isn’t a traditional museum. It commissions artworks across all disciplines and for all audiences. The venue brings together established artists and emerging talent in fields ranging from hip-hop to classical music, painting to digital media, literature to theater, sculpture to dance.
- The Shed occupies the Bloomberg Building, a modern structure designed by the architecture firm Diller Scofidio. The building is fully flexible, with a glass shell mounted on rails that can extend over the plaza in front of the museum or retract. Construction cost nearly $500 million.
What to See Inside The Shed
- Start with the museum’s first major commissioned work: “In Front of Itself” by New York artist Lawrence Weiner. It’s a pavement installation covering the plaza in front of the entrance. Giant letters face each other across the space.
- The Shed has two floors dedicated to exhibitions on the 2nd and 4th levels. Together they offer more than 2,300 m² (24,750 sq ft) of continuous gallery space. Check the Shed website for current exhibitions.
- The 6th floor houses the Griffin Theater, a 500-seat venue. Programming is equally diverse across all art forms. Expect to be surprised.
