What to Know About the Museum of the Dog

  • The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog is one of a kind. This museum features exclusively artworks depicting dogs. It’s run by the American Kennel Club, the national canine organization founded in 1884. “The museum’s mission is to celebrate the relationship between humans and dogs,” say the museum’s curators.
  • The Museum of the Dog originally opened in 1982 on Madison Avenue before relocating to Saint Louis, Missouri, in 1986. The museum returned to New York on February 8, 2019.
  • Today the museum is located at 101 Park Avenue in Midtown, in the same building as the American Kennel Club’s headquarters. The address number is pure coincidence—no connection to Walt Disney’s 101 Dalmatians. 😉

What to See at the Museum of the Dog

  • The Museum of the Dog holds an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures featuring dogs. You’ll also find porcelain pieces depicting dogs.
  • Among the most notable pieces is a paw print cast from the Roman era. Another curiosity: a painting of Millie Bush, the dog of former U.S. President George W. Bush.
  • The museum also offers interactive experiences and fun activities. You can use an interactive kiosk that transforms your face into a dog’s head, for example. You can also adopt a virtual dog and try to care for it as best you can.
