- The museum traces the story from early Vaudeville performances in 18th-century New York through the major productions on stage today. It’s a fascinating journey through time.
- The museum was founded by Julie Boardman, a theater producer, and Diane Nicoletti, an artistic director and producer. Both have won Tony Awards, the equivalent of Oscars for Broadway musicals.
What You’ll See at the Museum of Broadway
- The museum spans 25,800 square feet and is divided into three sections. You’ll start in the Map Room, where you can see the locations of all Broadway theaters on a map. You’ll also watch films and videos that tell the story of New York’s theaters.
- Next, you’ll travel through time via the Timeline. This section showcases around 500 musicals that made Broadway famous. It pays tribute to The Black Crook, the first true Broadway musical, which premiered in New York in 1866. Several rooms are decorated in the style of iconic shows, like a pink room dedicated to the Ziegfeld Follies or a grocery store straight out of West Side Story. Best of all, many exhibits are interactive. You’ll have the chance to take original, quintessentially New York selfies.
- The final section reveals what goes into creating a Broadway show. Step backstage and discover all the work involved in staging and producing a musical. The exhibition features original costumes and objects from shows like Hair and A Chorus Line.
