Who invented gospel singing?
Gospel is an emblematic song of the African-American community that resonates in churches on Sundays. Here's the history of gospel!

How Did Gospel Music Begin?
- Gospel music is deeply rooted in the history of slavery in the United States, which began in the South in the late 17th century and ended with the abolition law in 1865.
- Facing extremely difficult living conditions, especially on cotton plantations, enslaved people from Africa turned to prayer and song. In the 18th century, a new style of singing emerged: Negro spirituals. This style evolved and was adapted in Black churches during the 19th century under the name gospel.
- Historians date the first written references to the word “gospel” to 1874, but these songs had existed for much longer.
Where Can You Hear Gospel Music in New York?
- First thing to know: gospel is a religious song, so you must attend a Sunday service to hear it.
- However, while gospel is a style of Christian music, not all Christian churches use it. Gospel is primarily practiced by evangelical Christians, a branch of Christianity linked to Protestantism. Among the different evangelical denominations, Baptists are particularly known for the warmth of their gospel singing.
- Catholics, on the other hand, do not practice gospel. You will never hear a gospel choir in a Catholic church during a Sunday mass.
- To attend a gospel service, visit a Sunday service at an evangelical or Baptist church in Harlem.
How to Choose a Church in Harlem?
- Many visitors ask us on our Destination New York Facebook group for the address of a church where they can hear gospel singing. You’ll find the most well-known churches in our article on gospel services in Harlem.
- I should warn you that these churches are very popular with tourists, so you won’t be alone at the service. At some churches, like First Corinthian Baptist Church, tourists are seated in the mezzanine while members of the congregation sit on the main floor.
- For a more intimate experience and to understand Harlem’s history and culture, consider a guided tour of the neighborhood. Your guide can recommend a less touristy church in the area based on the time you visit.
