What are New York police three-wheelers used for?

New York Police don't just have sleek patrol cars... As you explore New York, you'll inevitably spot the quirky three-wheeled vehicles patrolling the city streets.

What are New York police three-wheelers used for?

Why the New York Police Department Uses Three-Wheelers

  • When you think of the New York Police Department, powerful patrol cars racing down avenues with lights flashing and sirens blaring come to mind. Yet while visiting New York, you might spot a very different vehicle—far less glamorous and admittedly a bit quirky: the Westward Go-4 Interceptor. Behind that striking name sits an unusual three-wheeled scooter.
  • This vehicle, less than 1.5 m (4.9 ft) wide, launched in the 1990s from Canadian manufacturer Westward. Several U.S. cities adopted it, including New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. Police departments use it for two specific jobs: parking enforcement and patrols in places where standard cars cannot go.
  • Technically, the scooter packs 66 horsepower and reaches a top speed of 72 km/h (45 mph). Westward offers both gasoline and electric versions with the same design.

Where to Spot the New York Police Three-Wheelers

  • Want to see a Westward Go-4 Interceptor for sure? Head to the Brooklyn Bridge. Patrols are almost always present, especially to stop tourists from climbing the cables for photos. After an incident in November 2014, police have maintained a near-constant presence on the bridge.
  • Another spot to find the NYPD’s quirky patrol vehicle: Central Park. The police use the three-wheeler to patrol the park alongside NYPD Smart cars.
  • Snap a photo next to the world’s smallest police vehicle. Ask the officer’s permission first, but in most cases, they’ll be happy to see your interest in their ride. Enjoy!
