What You Should Know About Lexington Avenue
- Lexington Avenue was laid out in 1832, running from Harlem through Manhattan.
- New Yorkers quickly nicknamed the avenue “Lex”.
- Lexington Avenue is lined with shops and hotels. The former Waldorf Astoria had its main entrance on Park Avenue, but also featured an entrance on Lexington Avenue at 46th Street. The hotel is now closed and will be converted into residences.
What to See on Lexington Avenue
- Among the many shops along the avenue, you’ll find the renowned Bloomingdale’s at 59th Street. The department store is known for its excellent selection of quality clothing.
- Between 53rd and 54th Street, look up at the Citigroup Center. This 59-story skyscraper stands out for its distinctively angled roof. Solar panels were originally planned for the top, but the project never materialized.
- You’ll enjoy a fine view of the Chrysler Building at the intersection with 42nd Street.
